.sketchbook.monday.

Drawing on a plane is not so easy. Also I had chips and gummi bears for lunch - because even though Charolotte NC has a ginormous airport, I still don't trust the food.
The sugar high should hit me at any moment.
Maybe I need some coffee too...

.adventures.

Raqs Bohéme this past Friday was really a lovely show. Not that I normally get to sit back and watch the show, and having "grown up" with the dancers it's not like I haven't seen them before, but it was a lovely change to be able to sit back and be a part of the audience and enjoy the variety and insane talent of these wonderful beautiful women.
And I'm extremely excited and on the edge of my seat for next months spectacular lineup - not least because my good friend Ami Amoré od St. Louis is coming in.
This is my excited face.

Saturday I got up SO early and prettied myself up and met with Phil Koenig to work on new promotional photos. Hopefully those will be ready by Wednesday, so....!!!
Of course I took my Tardis along for the ride...

This week I'm in Alabama...or I will be in a few hours after this plane I'm about to get on lands. Nothing fun or fancy - just day job stuff.
And we're boarding...

adventures!

...and my home is finally calm enough that I can process them!

Last night I confirmed that I'll perform in the July RAW showcase.  It's a third Thursday non-profit art showcase - music, dancing, makeup, fashion, fine art...everything. If anyone would like to go (though it's at 8pm at night on a Thursday) buy tickets through this link: http://www.rawartists.org/mariedemars and make sure you mark me as the artist you're supporting. It makes a difference. I'll be performing New Material, which may or may not include a blindfolded sword dance.

Maybe.

So tonight I'll be going to the June RAW event to check out the space and the set up, and to be fancy and drink cocktails.*  I expect to be exhausted tomorrow, so it's doubly good I'm not performing tomorrow night at Raqs Bohéme which is going to be an amazing show. I'm almost finished compiling the set lists and I'm really excited about the music as well as the dancers. Amy Jo and Melody have been dancing Bohéme since it started in April, but tonight I'm bringing in Etoile and Zoria who have never failed to awe and impress me with their performances.

Saturday morning I'm shooting new promo photos with Mister Phil Koenig, which I'm really excited about. He's amazing, and we'll be trekking about Lawrence and Tonganoxie in fields and on old dirt roads. Tonight I'll be consumed with getting costuming in order for the adventure.

EEEEE!!!!!!!

*Or instead of going to RAW I'll fall asleep on the couch at 7:30pm, wake up at 10pm and not be able to fall back asleep until 12:30am - thus negating the entire point of being exhausted today while still getting to be exhausted! Clearly I'm a genius.

Raqs Bohéme

This Friday at Czar Bar!
And yes, I realize it's not actually Third Friday - there was a scheduling hiccup due to the funkiness of the month starting on a Friday, and this month has FIVE FRIDAYS!

But this Friday - Melody Gabrielle, Amy Jo, Zoria, and Etoile!  It's going to be fairly spectacular. Doors open at 6, dancing begins at 6:30, and only 5$ to get in!

.Sketchbook in Time!.

If all goes as planned (because I don't really know what I'm doing), this will post while I'm neck deep in a drive to Michigan from Missouri to give my sister a cat.
My cat.
One of my cats.

It's a little sad, but as the pair of them absolutely REFUSE to reconcile, it's really just better for everyone involved: the cats don't get locked away from everyone else in the house anymore, me and the Mister don't have to listen to cats crying 24 hours a day, and my sister gets a cat that's house trained, neutered, vaccinated and micro-chipped for FREE.
Plus he's s food slut who will fall in love with anyone who'll feed him kitchen scraps.

So, this is what I drew yesterday. On my birthday.

yup.

.More.Sketchbook.

ink!

By the way, I'm not a Satanist.
After posting my last sketchbook spread, I got to thinking that the page with the spaghetti and the "symbols" might make it look that way, but I'm not. Not that my religion or faith or beliefs is anyones business but my own.
I've just been watching too much "Supernatural" lately.

And those symbols are devils traps from the show. And they're catching spaghetti, which is kind of one of my devils.
So...yeah.

EDIT: Also! Spicy peppers apparently get they're awesomness from lightning! In case you didn't know.

.segway.

Having been gluten free for over three years now, I've reached a point in my kitchen experiments where recipes come in three categories:
  1. foods that are naturally gluten free (unless you're being stupid about it),
  2. foods that can be gluten free with minor modifications,
  3. and alternate reality recipes which require 12 kinds of flour and I refuse to touch with a ten foot pole.
This is coming up because I'm home with family and my cousin asked if I'd seen all the gluten-free recipes on Pinterest, and was surprised that I really don't give a shit. I think of whatever it is I'm wanting to make, I find a recipe, I modify the recipe if I have to and if the modification will involve more than three types of flour*, eff it - surely there's a box of frozen something somewhere I can use in the meantime. Because it's food, and I'm not a baker.
And I really don't bake. My mom makes me homemade gluten free cake once or twice a year, and there's La Petite Rouge for all of my cupcake cravings, and Udi's for toast, and Amy's for pizza.
Beyond that....eh.
Because it's not that hard, once you get used to it.** Because you don't need it, and there are so many other wonderful things that I'd be so much more sad if I had to give up.
Like mangos. And avocado. And ice cream. And wine.
Srsly.

But srsly, you people who are going gluten free to lose weight...

*I use soy, buckwheat and almond flour as flavor dictates.
**Also, this tumblr is my favoritest tumblr OF ALL TIME! This is what it's like IN MY BRAIN. As far as gluten is concerned anyway...

.first.friday.adventures.

My sister's in town so everything has got a bit hectic, but somehow we managed to get ourselves out to June First Friday. The sky was beautiful...
And we did a drive-by of the Other Gallery, where some of my work's been hanging; only to find it was closed, on First Friday, which is sad. I also finally noticed the sign on the door that said "By Appointment Only", which is useless.

And after 20 minutes trying to find parking we were almost trampled by a peace march. I took a really horrible photo.

At the Leedy-Voulkos Art Center there are two particular exhibits which I wouldn't mind owning pieces from. The first was Acts of Selfishness and Devotion by artist Jane Almirall, where I took another horrible picture...

The room after was a group show, Terra, with artists Victoria Reed, Shannon Sullivan, and Ellen W. Wolf.
A.MA.ZING.
Victoria was our favorite.

Just a short jot upstairs was show by Clint Metcalf. I'm not really one for impressionistic abstract brushstrokes, but I really liked his work despite all of that. His paintings look like painting feels.

And over at Windhorse Tattoo is Head Games, a solo exhibit of new works by Alicia Ross. The Mister almost did buy me something from there, but we really don't have the wall space at the moment. And half of the work was already sold anyhow.

Somehow after we ended up in Zona Rosa at Bo Lings - I got the Pad Thai which was awful, but Mister got something delicious served in a pineapple.

We saw a comedy show at the Improv, and went home exhausted.
All in all and excellent First Friday!
